The Washington Redskins season is over , but preparations are underway for 2013.
Over the next 2 months the Redskins coaching staff will be building their game plan for the 2013 season. The staff will begin with self-analysis evaluating what the team did well and what they need to improve on from the previous year. Winning the NFC East Championship at 10-6 was a big accomplishment , but the Redskins will have to make some changes to stay at top.
The most important decision for the offensive coaches will be the use of the zone read offense, should they expand that part of the playbook or scrap it for more traditional sets? To some fans that decision is an easy one, especially on the heels of Robert Griffin’s knee injury, but the staff it will be more difficult. The NFL is about production and points, and Kyle Shanahan lead a top 5 offense with a pair of rookies as the workhorses. Can you afford to scrap the portion of your offense that was the most successful?
On defense Jim Haslett has to find players that can carry out his defensive vision. Washington started the year with goals of being a top 5 defense, but injuries and coaching derailed those goals almost as soon as the season started. This defense needs to upgrade its speed , and play making ability in the front 7.
The secondary came together as a unit the last 8 games of the season, How will that be affected if Raheem Morris leaves to take a defensive coordinator position?
Will the return of Brian Orakpo and Adam Carriker be enough to dial-up the pressure ?
Will a talented FS be the piece that completes the puzzle?
During the evaluation process the coaches will complete the final grades on their own players for the 2012 season.
The initial evaluations will determine the future of 19 players set to enter Unrestricted or Restricted Free Agency.
